YWCA Westman Women’s Shelter
All women have the right to a relationship free of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Don’t be ashamed to tell someone if your partner is abusing you, it’s not your fault. YWCA Westman Women’s Shelter offers a safe and caring environment for women and their children who are experiencing crisis and are at risk due to domestic violence. Our goal is to assist women whose lives have been affected by domestic violence by planning and implementing changes towards personal growth, increased independence and empowerment in their lives.
The Westman Women's Shelter opened in 1978 on the third floor of YWCA Meredith Place Residence, later relocating to 1st Street and presently at an undisclosed location. It is no longer located at the Residence. Our Shelter offers safe, emergency home to women, and their children, who are trying to escape from family violence. The Shelter is staffed with helpful and friendly people, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained counsellors offer information, make appropriate referrals to community agencies, and offer daily counselling sessions to both women and children. Meals, clothing, medication, personal supplies, childcare and assistance in locating housing are available to all residents.
The YWCA Westman Women's Shelter is a two-level building in Brandon, and can accommodate up to 24 women and children. There is a common dining room, large children’s playroom, a living room and laundry facilities.
The Women’s Shelter also offers individual and group counseling to the general public, follow up support for those who have stayed in shelter, children’s programs, public education, and a 24 hour crisis line for women and their children both in the shelter and in the community. Information on family violence, sexual assault and other related topics can also be provided to those who need it. As well accurate information and assistance is available on both legal and medical issues as they relate to family violence.
For security reasons the location of the Women’s Shelter is not disclosed to the public. To make an appointment or for more information call (204) 727-3644.
